What is 9:16 aspect ratio?
9:16 is the vertical video format: nine units wide, sixteen tall — typically 1080×1920 pixels. It's the native full-screen format of TikTok, Instagram Reels and YouTube Shorts. Filming or reframing for it means composing for a frame that platform UI eats into from the top and bottom.
Why did video go vertical?
Phones are held one way and full-screen wins over letterboxed. 9:16 is not a trend inside the short-form platforms — it is the shape of the screen itself. A landscape clip posted vertical arrives pre-shrunk to a third of the display and performs like it.
What breaks when you crop 16:9 to 9:16?
You keep only about a third of the horizontal frame: a 1920×1080 source yields a 607×1080 window, upscaled to 1080×1920. Two things go wrong in naive crops: the subject drifts out of the window whenever they lean, and the up-scale softens the image. The first is fixable by measured face-tracked reframing; the second by cropping from 4K sources when you have them. Run your own numbers in the aspect-ratio calculator.

Frequently asked questions
What resolution is 9:16 video?
1080×1920 is the standard export. The same ratio scales to 720×1280 and 2160×3840; platforms re-encode to their own ladder either way.
What are the safe zones in a 9:16 frame?
Roughly the top 200px and bottom 300px of a 1080×1920 frame belong to platform UI — username, sounds, like rail, caption box. Faces, captions and key graphics live in the middle band. Check any frame free with the safe-zone checker.
Can I convert a 16:9 video to 9:16 automatically?
Yes, but center-cropping is not enough — the subject is rarely centered. A good reframe measures where the face actually is in every scene and keeps the crop anchored to it, which is how Never's reframe works.
