The Editing Tax
Editing one 12-minute recording properly takes about 6.5 hours across ten tasks; outsourced, about $400. At one recording per week that is 338 hours a year — 8.5 working weeks — or $20,800 outsourced. Published 2026-08-04 with full methodology; cite as: The Editing Tax, Never Research, 2026.

What does one recording actually cost?
The unit of measurement is one 12-minute single-camera talking-head recording, taken through every step a professional edit includes. Times are wall-clock for an experienced solo editor using conventional tools; outsourced prices are mid-market 2026 rates.
| Task | Doing it yourself | Hiring it out |
|---|---|---|
| Watch back, find the good parts | 25 min | $0 (you still do this) |
| Remove filler, dead air, bad takes | 45 min | included |
| Colour, audio levels, music | 20 min | included |
| Graphics / lower thirds / stat cards | 60 min | included |
| Captions, styled, timed | 25 min | included |
| Reframe + export 9:16 | 15 min | included |
| Find and cut 8 short clips | 90 min | $200–400 |
| Write hooks + copy per platform | 40 min | $80 |
| Thumbnail | 20 min | $25 |
| Upload, caption, hashtag, schedule ×5 platforms | 50 min | $60 |
| Total | ≈ 6h 30m | ≈ $400 |
What does it cost per year?
Annualization is multiplication, published so the assumptions are checkable. Opportunity cost uses $150/hour — a deliberate mid-point for founders and senior operators; substitute your own rate, the table scales linearly.
| Cadence | Hours/year | Cash/year (outsourced) | Opportunity cost @ $150/hr |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 recording/week | 338 h | $20,800 | $50,700 |
| 2 recordings/week | 676 h | $41,600 | $101,400 |
| Daily | 2,372 h | $146,000 | $355,800 |
Methodology and limitations
Scope: post-production only — writing and filming are excluded on the argument that they are the creative work the editing tax competes with. 'Done properly' means the full package (graphics, captions, clips, per-platform packaging); a bare cut is cheaper and performs like one. Timings assume competence: a first-year editor runs slower on every line.
Known limitations, stated rather than hidden: the per-task times are one workflow measured deeply rather than a survey of many measured shallowly; outsourced prices vary by market; and cadence math assumes every recording gets the full treatment. The annual revision (The Editing Tax Report) adds format and segment breakdowns with the same published-assumptions rule. Compare your own week against how long a YouTube video actually takes.

One twelve-minute recording. Watching it back: 25 minutes. Cutting filler: 45. Colour and audio: 20. Graphics: 60. Captions: 25. Reframing for vertical: 15. Finding eight clips: 90. Hooks and copy: 40. A thumbnail: 20. Uploading and scheduling everywhere: 50. Six and a half hours — for twelve minutes of talking. Once a week, that's 338 hours a year. Eight and a half working weeks. That's the editing tax.
Frequently asked questions
How was the 6.5-hour figure measured?
Task-by-task timing of the full post-production of a single-camera 12-minute talking-head recording, done properly (graphics, captions, clips, per-platform packaging), by an experienced solo editor. Assumptions and per-task times are published in full below — challenge any line item against your own workflow.
Is this an ad dressed as research?
It's both a real measurement and obviously relevant to what we sell — which is why the methodology is complete and the data downloadable. If your numbers come out lower, the honest conclusion is your editing tax is lower. Most people who time themselves find the opposite.
Can I cite or reuse these numbers?
Yes — CC BY 4.0. Cite 'The Editing Tax, Never Research, 2026' and link this page. The dataset (JSON) and methodology are in the repository of record and update annually; dated revisions stay available.
